Today there are many problems when it comes to building and designing a quality pond for koi. The biggest issue is that few people can agree on how to do it. If you are looking for some info on how to make a pond please refer to this book for your own at home version. How to make a pond

Most people who decide to build a koi pond start out very keen and determined to build it right the first time; then the problem starts. When they start researching and asking their friends for advice, they soon get overwhelmed or confused with conflicting information.
Much of the advice comes from individuals who, though well meaning, have very limited experience in building a quality koi pond. They may have built a pond that turned out very successful, but unless you build a pond exactly the same size and shape, what worked for them may not work for you. So getting the right advice from a professional is your best case.
Here are some books we recommend on this topic.

For a koi pond to really be successful it should meet these three basic requirements.
First, it needs to provide superior water quality. Not just clear water, but water that is healthy for the koi. Without healthy water your koi experience could be one of constantly treating sick koi.
Second, it needs to be built so that predators cannot harm the koi. Having a "deep area" for them to hide is not enough. The whole pond needs to be deep enough and contoured in a fashion so that preditors will not even waste their time trying to get to the koi.
Finally, a successful koi pond should be easy to maintain. Many ponds, due to their poor design, are extremely difficult and time consuming to take care of.
Whichever pond you choose if you choose these basic guidelines we are sure your koi will be pleased for years to come.
